CAF Characterization/Monologue

SHE’S DATING THE GANGSTER
(ATHENA DIZON)
by Sharen Ilyich Estocapio 10-MMA
Hinihintay na siya ni Abigail. Diyos ko. Sobrang mahal na mahal ko siya, pero mas kailangan siya ni Abigail. “To wish for us, is to wish an end for Abigail.”
Kenjie, I’m sorry… Sorry…
Maraming araw, ginusto kong makita ka muli. And I did. Nakita kita, kasama mo si Kenneth. Ang saya-saya mo. Alam kong okay ka na. “To see you grow, from my gangster, to man, to a father. It was all worth it.”
Too bad I’m gonna have to leave you once again.
    Inaantok na ako Kenjie.

What is KPOP?

K-pop (an abbreviation of Korean pop; Hangul: 케이팝; RR: kei-pap) is a musical genre originating in South Korea that is characterized by a wide variety of audiovisual elements. Although it comprises all genres of "popular music" within South Korea, the term is more often used in a narrower sense to describe a modern form of South Korean pop music covering: dance-pop, pop ballad, electronic, rock, metal, hip-hop music and R&B.
In 1992, modern K-pop was ushered in with the formation of Seo Taiji & Boys, whose successful experimentation with different music styles had sparked a paradigm shift in the music industry of South Korea. As a result, the integration of foreign musical elements has now become a common practice in the K-pop industry.
By tapping into social networking services and the video sharing platform YouTube, the K-pop industry's ability to secure a sizable overseas audience has facilitated a noticeable rise in the global proliferation of the genre. Since the mid-2000s, the K-pop music market has experienced double digit growth rates. In the first half of 2012, it grossed nearly US$3.4 billion, and was recognized by Time magazine as "South Korea's Greatest Export".
First gaining popularity in East Asia in the late 1990s, K-pop entered the Japanese music market towards the turn of the 21st century. In the late 2000s, it grew from a musical genre into a subculture among teenagers and young adults of East and Southeast Asia. Currently, the spread of K-pop to other regions of the world, via the Korean Wave, is seen in parts of Latin America, Northeast India, North Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and immigrant enclaves of the Western world.

Being an EXO-L

What do you think about being an EXO-L?

Being an EXO-L for me is like falling in love with those 12 pretty little aliens that i met online. EXO-L is the fandom name of the fans of a famous KPOP group named EXO. There are a lot of EXO-L around the world. It is fun being a fan of EXO at first, during the MAMA Era until the MID Era. But during the OVERDOSE Era (summer of 2014), a lot of rumors became viral around the internet about the leader of EXO-M, Wu Yi Fan (or know as Kris). Kris is a Chinese member of EXO and the leader of EXO-M (EXO subgroup whop has 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members who sang and performed in Mandarin)  The rumor was about Kris filing a lawsuit against SM Entertainment. The rumor became true and the other EXO  members continue with their activities for their First Solo Concert, The Lost Planet (TLP). This broke our hearts and we felt sad. A lot of fans were mad at Kris because they thought that he left EXO because of some selfish reasons and they left our fandom. And after that issue, another rumour became viral around the internet. It was about Byun Baekhyun (main singer of EXO-K) and Kim Taeyeon (leader, main singer of SNSD or known as Girls Generation). SM Entertainment confirmed that the rumor was real. Then after 5 months, Lu Han ( lead singer, lead dancer and face of the group of EXO-M) was rumored to leave EXO. The rumor was about Luhan filing the same lawsuit with the same lawyer that Kris and Hangeng (a former member of a senior famous group in SM Town, SUJU - Super Junior) used when they filed their lawsuit. Then after Luhan's issue, another rumor was spread through the internet about Huang Zi TAo. A video was uploaded in the internet about Tao hanging out with his friends and then kissing a girl before saying good bye. The rumors said that it was Tao's girlfriend. And then after that, the fans are guessing who will be next one leaving EXO. Every after an issue about a member leaving the group, a rumor about a member who's in a relationship was revealed. I don't know what's happening with EXO and the entertainment but we will find out the answers to our questions in the future.
2012 was a great year where EXO was climbing up to the top for the attentions that all of their fans where giving them. They were an awesome rookies back then. When they debuted, a lot of fans were already supporting them because of their talents and faces. They performed their activites separately, EXO-K in Korea while EXO-M in China. 2013 was the year where they became popular worldwide. It was also a spectacular year where they performed as 12. EXO-K and EXO M performing as one. We, fans, witnessed during 2013 the love and friendship that the members shared with each other. The unity of the members in order to reach their goals. This is the year where they won a lot of awards. 2013 was a great year where EXO-K, EXO-M, and EXO-L, shared a lot of wonderful memories with each other. The bond between the members and to all EXO-L was so strong as rock. EXO-L was the strongest fandom back then. But when 2014 came, everything was all messed up. But I hope this 2015, everything will fall into its right places. 10 in our eyes, but 12 on our hearts. EXO will forever be 12. OT12 forever. EXO, WE ARE ONE!!! SARANGHAJA!!!

KPOP Terminologies

Before you become a proper K-pop fan, there are some words you need to know:
Aegyo: refers to super-cuteness. Puppy eyes/pouty lips/posing with a peace sign/ kitty paws – that kind of thing. In essence, Aeygo is faux innocence.
Sasaeng: an obsessive fan who goes way over the top.
Oppa/unnie/hyung/noona/sunbae/hoobae: age differences are important in South Korea. It stems from the Confucian concept of filial piety and respecting your elders. As a result, a woman would call an older man “oppa”, and an older woman “unnie”. A man calls an older man “hyung” and an older woman “noona”. This translates to K-pop too: they’ll refer to their fellow band-mates as “sunbae” if they are senior or “hoobae” if they are junior.

Red Ink in South Korea

Every society has its own odd superstitions, and while Westerners worry about black cats, open umbrellas, and spilled salt, Koreans can’t stand red ink. Supposedly, if you write someone’s name with a red pen, that person is going to have some really bad luck in the near future. They might even die.

So why does red ink send some Koreans into red alert? Well, when a South Korean has shuffled off this mortal coil, his or her name is written in a family register and on funeral banners with red ink. Some believe the red ink drives away demons and protects the dead, but if you write the name of a living person in red, you get the reverse effect. So if you’re ever signing a contract, writing a letter, or grading a paper, play it safe and use black instead.
